From political tool to cultural haven: the history of Puerto Rican Parades in Connecticut

Connecticut’s first Puerto Rican parade in 1964 was held with the slogan “Register and Vote,” to encourage political participation in the growing Boricua population, due to economic opportunity. Parades quickly spread to Bridgeport in 1965, Waterbury in 1966, and New Haven in 1968.
